Reyhan Çapan, who is the former editor-in-chief of Özgür Gündem daily newspaper, which was closed by a statutory decree, has been arrested.
At the time when she was still working as the editor-in-chief of Özgür Gündem, Çapan was sentenced to 1 year and 3 months in prison on charge of "propagandizing for a terrorist organization" by the Istanbul 17th Heavy Penal Court. It was also stated that the criminal fines given to Çapan were commuted to a prison sentence.
After the İstanbul District Administrative Court upheld the ruling of prison sentence, a detention warrant was issued for Çapan. On May 10, she was taken into custody in the district of Hopa in Artvin.
On May 11, Reyhan Çapan was sent from the Artvin Courthouse, where she was referred to and arrested, to Artvin Prison. Çapan will then be sent to Sivas Open Prison for Women.
Özgür Gündem case is still continuing
Reyhan Çapan is being tried at the court case filed against the former columnists and administratives of the Özgür Gündem daily newspaper, which was closed as per a statutory decree, at the 14th Heavy Penal Court.
At the last hearing of the case held on May 7, the Prosecutor's Office demanded that three people, including Reyhan Çapan, be given prison sentences on charge of "successive propaganda for a terrorist organization." (TP/SD)
