Phyllo, ‘Disputed’ Lavash Under UNESCO Protection

Phyllo and lavash have been included by the joint effort of five countries on the list of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The dispute on the lavash was continuing for a long time. First Armenia presented a file to UNESCO committee for Armenian lavash. Lavash was removed from the list when Azerbaijan objected to this.

Later on, Armenia defended that traditional Armenian lavash was “unique” because of its cooking technique. UNESCO took back Armenian lavash.

Upon that Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Iran submitted the joint file of “Culture of Making and Sharing Thin Bread: Lavash, Katırma, Jupka, Phyllo”.

Convened in Ethiopia’s capital city of Addis Ababa yesterday (November 30), UNESCO included pholly made of thin bread and lavash made in by Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Iran in Intangible Cultural Heritage List in the meeting. (NV/TK)
