52 men will write on male violence for bianet for 52 weeks in 2018.
First article by journalist Murat Çelikkan will be on bianet on January 10, 2018 Wednesday.
In the following weeks, men from the fields of media, literature, academy, sports, cinema, music, rights struggle are going to share their thoughts and experiences with respect to their “manhood” and “male violence”.
This project will be coordinated by Şenay Aydemir. The drawings are from Kemal Gökhan Gürses.
2017 didn’t go well for women. One of the good things was the #MeToo movement.
Everything started with a Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein being exposed. He harassed many women through years. Some of the women including Hollywood celebrities exposed Weinstein, some others remained silent. Both exposers and those who remain silent were focus of the discussion.
US actress Alyssa Milano shared a message on her social media account October 15: “If all the women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote ‘MeToo.’ as a status, we might give people a sense of magnitude of the problem”.
The #MeToo movement began this way. It has been voiced louder that the women shouldn’t remain silent against harassment and that the “male” pressure surrounding them.
It didn’t take long before men came up with a hashtag; #HowIWillChange (#BenNasılDeğişeceğim) started two days after it.
bianet supported this call by making a news report two days later. I posted the first tweet with #BenNasılDeğişeceğim hashtag. No one followed it.
May 52 different approaches, experiences and questioning during 52 weeks be a step to avoid this avoiding. Why do we men resist “change”? May each piece make us men question, think, contemplate.
The figures on male violence speak for themselves; you can look at bianet’s Male Violence Monitoring Report released every month. These reports also show women’s gains against male state.
In short, “It’s not an accident” that there is a man behind every incident of violence. Let us men start this way by accepting women’s “It’s not an accident, it's male violence” slogan. (HK/TK)
