'1964 Memory of Imbros' exhibition canceled

The exhibition "We Will Meet Again: Imroz's 1964 Memory," planned to be held in Imbros (Gökçeada), was canceled after it was targeted on social media.

Prepared by journalist Melike Çapan and initially held at Balat Yuvakimyon Girls' High School in November 2022, the exhibition was supposed to meet its visitors on August 18 in Gökçeada.

The exhibition was first targeted on social media and later in the statement by the Gökçeada City Council.

Melike Çapan announced the cancellation and explained why.

"They said that if the exhibition takes place, they will file a complaint with the prosecutor's office. The allegations are that I am betraying the state. I have written many news articles, and made interviews about minorities in Turkey. I have never done this as an act against the state, but rather with an effort to give voice to communities regardless of their religion, language, or beliefs, so that their rights should not be neglected. I am canceling the exhibition now to prevent any harm to the Greek community on the island or in Istanbul during this process," Çapan said.
