37 Percent of EU’s Waste in Turkey

According to the data of the Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union (EU), the EU countries exported 31 million tons of waste in 2019.

As reported by Euronews, Turkey has ranked first with 11.4 tons of waste imported from the EU, well ahead of other countries. While India has ranked second by having imported 2.9 million tons of waste from the EU countries, Britain has ranked third with 1.9 million tons.

Turkey received three times more waste

According to these figures, 37 percent of the waste exported from the EU in 2019 came to Turkey. This rate is 9 percent for India, 6 percent for Britain and 5 percent each for Switzerland and Norway. Other countries have accounted for 38 percent in the statistics.

The amount of waste imported by Turkey from the EU countries has risen exponentially over the years. As of last year, this amount has tripled since 2004. In fact, in the press statement of the Eurostat, Turkey has been referred to as "the main destination for the EU's waste."

The total value of 31 million tons of waste exported by the EU last year has been announced as 13.4 billion Euro.

The EU, which exports its waste, is also an importer of waste. Having exported 31 million tons of waste in 2019, the EU also imported 16.7 million tons of waste, the total value of which was 12.8 billion Euro.

In 2004, the amount of waste imported and exported by the EU was similar. However, in the course of time, the amount exported has increased while the imports have decreased. (PT/SD)
