Compensation for Fan Who Lost His Eye with Plastic Bullet

The lawsuit brought by Osman Akarsu Yılmaz, who lost his eye in a police intervention in fans protesting club administration, has been concluded.

Bursa 3rd Administrative Court has ordered Yılmaz, who lost his eye with a plastic bullet fired by police, to be paid 376 thousand 879 liras (83,000 euros).

Pepper gas and plastic bullet

According to Halil Özçoban from Doğan News Agency (DHA), police intervened in the fans who called on the Bursaspor administration to resign during the game between Bursaspor and Galatasaray at Bursa Atatürk Stadium in April 2014. A large number of people were affected by the pepper gas.

One of the plastic bullets fired by police hit right eye of Yılmaz (31).

Yılmaz was taken to Uludağ University Medical Faculty Hospital for treatment. Yılmaz’s right eye lost its sight.

Jail term for police

After the treatment was completed, Yılmaz filed a criminal complaint against the police officers.

Deputy police chief Aydın T. and police officer Nedim K. were sued for “reckless injury”. The officers each faced up to 2 years in prison.

As Aydın T. was acquitted, Nedim K. was sentenced to 6 months and 20 days in prison. The announcement of the verdict was deferred.

Lawsuit against Governorship and Security General Directorate

Yılmaz sued Bursa Governorship and Security General Directorate for damages.

Due to the permanent sight loss in Yılmaz’s right eye, Bursa 3rd Administrative Court decided that Yılmaz, who lost his eye with a plastic bullet fired by police, be paid 376 thousand 879 liras. (AS/TK)
