Missing Witnesses in Return to Life Case
Third party lawyer Ömer Kavili has complained about the lack of transparency in the Return to Life trial, as well as the disappearance of hundreds of witnesses. More than 30 people died when security forces raided prison facilities in 2000.
In the trial on the "Return to Life" operations, in which security forces stormed 20 prisons on 19 December 2000 to end hunger strikes by prisoners, and 32 people were killed, hundreds of witnesses are not to be found.
Witnesses and suspects missing
Third party lawyer Ömer Kavili had demanded the identities and addresses of gendarmerie officers who had joined the operation, and found that out of 1614 people 682 could not be reached.
He also complains that the statements made by many gendarmes they claim not to have been involved in the operations.
After six years, it is still not clear who was heading the intervention, and according to the old law, the case would lapse after seven and a half years. (AÖ/EÜ/AG/EÜ)
