Woman Who Killed Her Rapist Father-in-Law Acquitted

Anatolia 4th Heavy Penal Court in İstanbul has ruled acquittal of E.Y. (35), who killed her father-in-law who raped her.

According to a report by Sevgim Begüm Yavuz from Sözcü daily newspaper, E.Y. had murdered her father-in-law A.Y. (69), who raped her numerous times, with a gun on February 6, 2017.

A lawsuit demanding from 12 to 18 years in prison on charge of “murder under unjust provocation” was filed against E.Y. Kept in detention for eight months, E.Y. was released in the first hearing.

The court asked E.Y. why she didn’t tell her husband about the rape and harassments. E.Y. said, “He constantly threatened me. He put a knife on my baby’s throat numerous times. If I could tell my husband, he himself would have killed him. I was resisting but couldn’t fight back, I wasn’t strong enough. I could do nothing. I had no place to go, my father had passed away. My mother had gotten married again and she was living in another city”.

The court rendered its verdict by majority votes.

Member judge Zeynep Hatun Sarıçam stated that “Attack and defense didn’t take place simultaneously and the defendant could have gone to law enforces” and reported a minute of dissent on the verdict. (ÇT/TK)
