Demonstrations and events banned in Van

The Governor's Office of Turkey's eastern province of Van has announced that protest marches and public protest meetings will be banned from June 3 to 17 on the grounds of "public health and public order."

According to the statement released on the official website of the Van Governor's Office, the following events can take place on the condition that they are permitted by the local administration: "Making press statements, staging a sit-in protest, conducting surveys, setting up tents and stands, launching petitions, distributing leaflets, handouts and flyers."

While the protest marches and public protest meetings have been banned in reference to the Article 17 of the Law no. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations and it will be in effect for 15 days starting from June 3 until June 17, its objective has been indicated in following words:

"Preventing the protests and attacks considered to directly and openly meet the criteria for restriction and ban foreseen in our Constitution and laws; ensuring the safety of life and property of our citizens; eliminating the plans of the terrorist organizations and, within this context, ensuring national security, public order and public health, preventing the committal of crimes, maintaining fundamental rights and freedoms as well as the fundamental rights and freedoms of others and public order, preventing the spread of incidents of violence."
