Workers of Turkey's largest online food delivery company continue protests for better wages

Delivery workers at Yemeksepeti, Turkey's largest online food delivery company, continue protesting for better wages and working conditions.

The workers today (February 10) once again gathered in front of the company's headquarters in İstanbul. Republican People's Party (CHP) deputy Veli Ağbaba and singer and activist Haluk Levent also joined the workers.

"I hope the problem with the employers will be solved as soon as possible and everyone will overcome these troubled days," Levent said.

MP Ağbaba said the obstacles to the unionization of delivery workers should be removed as it has become an important and growing sector in Turkey.

"These people risk their lives on two wheels. They were out on the streets even in the period of the pandemic," he said. "The demands of these people are not a big deal ... We are calling on Yemeksepeti to sit down and talk to these people."

The workers demand a net monthly salary 5,500 lira (406 USD), premiums and fringe benefits.

Also, they want their line of business to be registered as "transport," their union activities to be guaranteed and no workers to lose their jobs because of seeking their rights.

Since the start of the year, delivery workers of several e-commerce companies have carried out protests and strikes demanding better wage hikes. (AÖ/VK)
