‘MHP gives the instruction, legal system operates with racist motives’

Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Spokesperson Ebru Günay held a press briefing at the HDP Central Office in Ankara today (March 1).

Günay addressed the issues on the party's agenda, especially the summaries of proceedings issued against nine MPs of the party and the recent debates on the HDP's possible closure, as it has long been demanded by Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), the partner of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) in the People's Alliance.

Reminding the reporters that the summaries of proceedings issued against the HDP MPs were first sent to the Justice Ministry, then to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), Günay said:

"Who gives the instruction? Of course the MHP, which is the junior partner of the government. We have been witnessing a legal system which is operating with purely political and racist motives."

Indicating that "this government is an enemy of the people's will and to the society's right to make a choice with its free will", Günay also talked about the killing of 13 people in Gare. She briefly said:

"The government, in an attempt to cover up its responsibility in Gare, is attacking the HDP, our co-chairs, MPs and voters again, as it has done before. People commit suicide due to starvation, shopkeepers are miserable; but the government and its partner are occupied with closing the HDP."

'Pandemic' criticisms to the AKP

Referring to the crowded AKP congresses and funerals amid the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, Günay said that "the picture of carelessness, double standards and hypocrisy manifests itself in the AKP congresses, funerals and weddings of pro-government people."

"You fine everyone in HDP's congresses and events due to the pandemic and emphasize the sensitivity about social distancing. You prevent our press statement with 10-15 MPs at the Kapıköy border gate, you fine the citizens, whom you have forced to live on the streets, due to the curfews; but when it comes to the AKP congresses, you praise them saying, 'It is packed'," HDP Spokesperson Günay protested further.
