Telecommunications authority hikes internet line fees by 67 percent for service providers

The Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) has raised the line rental and port fees for service providers by 67 percent. The hike will come into effect on June 1.

The hike was approved on March 9, after 55 percent of the shares of Türk Telekom were handed over to the Turkey Wealth Fund (TWF).

An association of service providers criticized the hike, saying that it will "inflict great financial losses" on companies that purchase wholesale services from Türk Telekom.

The first decision after Türk Telekom became state-owned again being a price hike was "saddening," Halil Nadir Teberci, the head of the Free Telecommunication Operators Association (TELKODER), said on Tuesday (March 30).

"As alternative businesses providing services to millions of corporate and individual subscribers, we want the decisions taken to be reviewed and reversed," he said.

Reversing the decision would both benefit service providers and customers, he added.
