Increasing individual armament causing death and injury of thousands

Two thousand 278 people died throughout Türkiye and 4 thousand 231 were injured last year resulting from a total of 3,984 cases of armed violence. 

The Hope Foundation (Umut Vakfı) carrying out activities in order to draw attention to and fight individual armament and the increase in armed violence published the 2022 Violence Map of Türkiye.

Three thousand and 984 cases of armed violence were reflected in the media according to the report the foundation prepared, going through the local and national press.

Sharp objects were used in 616 of these cases of armed violence (15 percent) while 3 thousand 368 murders were committed by using firearms (85 percent).

Most cases in Marmara region

The regions where most cases of armed violence took place did not alter from previous years.

Marmara region in the northwest, which is the most populated and where there is the most migration, was where most cases of armed violence occurred. A thousand and 136 cases of armed violence were seen in the Marmara region in which 560 people were killed and thousand and 218 were injured.

Akdeniz region came second with 571 cases of armed violence, while the Southeast Anatolian region was third with 566 cases. There were 543 cases of armed violence in the Blacksea region, 463 in the Central Anatolia region, 459 in the Aegean region, and 246 in the East Anatolian region.

The cities with the most number of armed violence cases: 

The ten cities where the most number of armed violence cases occurred were İstanbul, Adana, Samsun, Urfa, Sakarya, Kocaeli, Antalya, İzmir, Konya, and Bursa.

"Shutting their eyes to individual armament"

The Hope Foundation issued a statement together with the report. The statement says, "We witness an increase in individual armament each day but the authorities do not take any kind of action. There have been many proposals in the parliament for a regulation preventing individual armament but all were rejected. So this means that those who are responsible are shutting their eyes to individual armament."

"Justice and legal regulations, prevention of individual armament, fair trial and justice are necessary for everyone," says the Hope Foundation. (AÖ/PE)
